SYLVA Science
advancing forestry knowledge

We undertake independent strategic research and seek to inform forestry policy development and decision-making.

We lead an independent think-tank Forestry Horizons. The written outputs of all original research and consultancies performed by Sylva staff are published on the website and freely available.

During 2010 we have been developing a new 'citizen science' project: TreeWatch. The concept is that we keep a watchful eye on the state of health of trees with the help of volunteers. TreeWatch was launched as a pilot in July 2010.

Forestry Horizons
the independent forestry think-tank

Through our Forestry Horizons independent think-tank we aim to support sustainable forest management by undertaking strategic and applied research.

Forestry Horizons has become very active as our independent perspective becomes valued. Commissioned research reports have been produced for public and private bodies, in the UK and beyond. Papers and articles have been published in the forestry press and presentations given to various stakeholders in the UK and beyond.  Forestry Horizons is linked with the Global Forest Information Service.

Some of our recent work:
  • Forest management and silvicultural reponses to project climate change (a peer-reviewed publication)
  • Growing valuable broadleaved species (EU COST Action E42)
  • Top ten questions for forestry (T10Q)
  • Forests and energy (ICF Conference Proceedings)

We have a dedicated website for the project and this allows us to keep all our scientific publications together. The Forestry Horizons website regularly attracts up 3000 visits per month. You can visit the Forestry Horizons website where many of our publications are available for free download.

TreeWatch

The aims of TreeWatch are to:

  1. Create and maintain a registry of tree health.
  2. Contribute to a scientific understanding of the impacts of environmental stress on tree health.
  3. Develop a national volunteer network that could function as an early warning system in the face of new threats.
  4. Promote public engagement with environmental science in general, and specifically with the health and vitality of our tree resource.
TreeWatch

TreeWatch was launched as a pilot project in July 2010. With the support of partners (Earthwatch, Tree Council and Forest Research) we have asked volunteers to survey trees for the horse chestnut leaf miner. Find our more at www.TreeWatch.com
