It's become obvious from doing it myself that taking a detailed inventory of the different compartments of a woodland, having decided on any compartment divisions, really helps for making a woodland plan, as the information is so much clearer in your head, and decisions about what action to take for each compartment aren't made in a hurry. I'm really glad I took the time to do a thorough investigation of woodland compartments before trying to make any decisions about a plan. Facts first, decisions later!

In a number of woodlands I have found the same. It is only when you take a good walk through a compartment and actually get meaningful inventory information on paper do you really start to get a handle on what are the best management prescriptions for this woodland.
