Oak Silviculture, Herts

myForest is a free service for woodland owners, forestry businesses and wood users to support our sustainable future.

Wood culture
myForest works closely with partners on understanding how local timber and wood fuel networks can support a 'One Planet Living' approach. The forestry sector has a great opportunity to create a ‘wood culture’ that demonstrates how the management and marketing of woodland resources can support sustainable rural economies.

Woodland management support
myForest provides a free user account and management planning resources to support owners, managers and agents in managing the UK's woodlands.

Market networks
myForest revolves around a web-map that provides a platform for wood users to link up with local wood producers. Business can promote their products and services and woodland owners can post inventory details of what is growing in their wood.

Wood miles and low carbon living
The web-map aims to reduce distances that wood travels (wood miles) through encouraging local trade. Reduced carbon emissions from transport, a shift from fossil fuel usage to wood fuel and the promotion of home-grown timber as a ‘low embodied energy’ construction material, will strengthen forestry’s low carbon credentials.

Environmental Change
myForest aims to promote the importance of sustainable woodland management in ensuring the vitality of woodland ecosystems in the face of the environmental challenges presented by climatic change.

Woodland Management Research
Through myForest, the Sylva Foundation aims to gather woodland inventory information. This data will contribute to an understanding of the potential productivity of woodlands to supply wood fuel, alongside the increased production of quality homegrown timber.

Development
We would like to thank the many woodland owners, forestry stakeholders and project supporters who have contributed to the development of the myForest website. myForest aims to continually evolve in order to improve as a facility and through this approach, support the efficient functioning of a sustainable forestry sector.

"...this is a stunning use of new technology in a traditional industry. It has the potential to be a major step forward in the regeneration of our woodland management culture. Congratulations to Sylva in taking on and developing this innovative project." - Paul Orsi, Rural Enterprises Manager, Blenheim Palace
